Freescale 8-bit microcontroller delivers exceptional price/performance and integration in a small footprint

Cost-effective SE8 offers a high level integration in a 28-pin 8-bit MCU with smooth migration to Freescale 5V MCU portfolio

February 23rd, 2009

AUSTIN, Texas – Feb. 23, 2009 – Freescale Semiconductor has introduced the 8-bit MC9S08SE8/4 (SE8) microcontroller (MCU), providing exceptional performance and integration in a 28-pin 8-bit MCU. The SE8 MCU offers excellent compatibility with Freescale’s 5V MCU portfolio, including pin, peripheral and tool compatibility with S08SH devices (S08SH8 and S08SH32) and pin compatibility with RS08KA MCUs. The SE8 device enhances Freescale’s entry-level 8-bit microcontroller portfolio by extending the advantages of the HCS08 core and peripherals to 5V applications.

The highly integrated SE8 MCU family provides a range of cost-effective, higher-pin-count device options, including a 20 MHz MCU version for entry-level products. Enhanced functionality includes rich analog capabilities, a comprehensive set of serial communication modules, an on-chip temperature sensor and robust memory options.

The SE8 MCUs are ideal for a wide range of general-purpose consumer and industrial applications in the 2.7V to 5.5V range, such as:

- Personal care/hand-held devices

- AC-powered consumer goods

- Power tools

- Security systems

- Lawnmowers

- Small appliances

- Treadmills

- Vacuum cleaners

- Industrial appliances/compressors

- DC cooling fan applications in computers

- Power supplies

- AC voltage line monitors

MC9S08SE8/4 (SE8) features

- 8-bit HCS08 core scaling to 40 MHz

- Integrated third-generation flash memory and RAM

- Flexible clock options

- 22 I/O pins, one input-only pin and one output-only pin

- Ganged output option for PTB (5:2) and PTC (3:0)

- Multiple serial communication options

- 10-channel, 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC)

- Real-time counter (RTC)

- Three timer modules

- System protection features

Pricing and availability

Samples of the SE8 devices are available now. The suggested resale price for 10,000-piece quantities starts at 85 cents (USD). The DEMO9S08SE8 demonstration board is available at a suggested resale price of $75 (USD). For more information about Freescale’s 8-bit USB MCUs, visit www.freescale.com/files/pr/se8.html.
